There is a difference between a mentor, coach and a champion.
You need to understand each role so you can fit your career (or personal) need with the appropriate peer-to-peer, supportive relationships.
1. Mentor:
The goal of mentorship is to provide the mentee with advice, exposure, and inspiration through sharing.
If you’re looking to expand your network or perspective about a given field, find a mentor who can offer advice and support from their own experiences.
2. Champion:
An active and vocal supporter of your career, works within your organization, and above you in the career ladder.
If you’re facing institutional or cultural barriers of advancement, you need a champion to help you overcome obstacles and fight for your promotion.
3. Coach:
Someone willing to dedicate time and effort to helping you improve. May teach you a new technical skill, introduce you to a new field, or enhance your soft skills.
If you’re learning a new skill, entering a new field, or looking to try something new, you need a coach.
4. Accountability partner:
Accountability partners is someone you trust, who will keep you honest and moving on a path you set for yourself.
You have to be careful of PREDATORY MENTORSHIP a.k.a the svengalis.
Know the type of support you need for personal & professional growth.
A. Find someone you trust to offer honest feedback.
B. Talk to them about your goals
C. Get specific with them about actions you will want to take to meet your goals
D. Revisit your skills, strengths and strategies to see how well you have improved
