Fellowships are short-term opportunities that can last for years but are usually just a few months long. Universities and institutions, companies, nonprofits, trusts, media organizations, and public agencies can all grant, oversee, and finance fellowships. Fellowships, unlike most internships, usually have a stipend. In certain cases, fellows receive extra incentives such as health insurance, accommodation, transportation, or loan repayment. However, the true advantage is the career growth that fellows can expect to gain from the experience.

Types of Fellowships

Graduate fellowships: These fellowships for graduate students help to defray the expenses of their graduate school experience, such as tuition. Fellowships may also include a stipend for living costs and health care, and they may fund expenses relating to a graduate student’s career advancement, such as conference fees.

Postdoctoral fellowships: These fellowships are intended for people who have recently completed their doctorates but wish to spend more time to study and research. Some postdoc fellowships finance intensive courses in a specific academic discipline, allowing scholars to become specialists in a technical yet valuable topic. Many postdoctoral fellowships require fellows to teach classes as well as perform research.

Medical fellowships are only available to doctors who have already completed medical school and a residency in their medical specialty. Medical fellows are physicians who choose to undergo further medical instruction in a sub-specialty in order to become master practitioners in a specific field of medicine.

Your fellowship application or sometimes known as expression of intent (EoI) is the section of your application where you introduce yourself to the committee, clarify what you want to do, and make your case on why you’re the best candidate. Fellowship applications, as well as the proposals they need, each have their own set of criteria and procedures that applicants must fully understand before beginning and strictly adhere to once they begin. Although you can closely read all criteria, there are several general rules that can be applicable to most fellowship proposals. The positive news is that your application does not have to be submitted as a finished application; several evaluation committees anticipate that your goals, ideas, and expectations will change during the process. However, a suggestion should demonstrate that you’ve thoroughly considered that you want the fellowship and how you will relate to the program.
